If you wear eyeglasses prescribed by an optometrist, then you know people face a dilemma every time they go out in the sun. They must decide whether or not to stay with every day prescription glasses? If they do, it puts them at great risk with the aging effects of the sun, such as wrinkles caused by squinting. Even worse your typical prescription glasses provide no UV protection. This can lead to serious eye damage after a while. So apparently the answers is, a person should carry around a separate pair of presciption sunglasses and swap them with the everyday pair when we are in the sun, right?

Thankfully, there is another option. By choosing transition lenses, a person can wear the same pair of eyeglasses both inside and outside in the sun. When wearing transition lenses, when a erson is inside the lenses stay lighter, and when they go outside in the sun the lenses quickly darken and provide UV protection.

Transition Lenses, also known as photochromic lenses, are pre coated with chemicals that respond quickly to sun light. These lenses are created from glass and have sterling silver chloride or sterling silver halide embedded inside lenses. There are also Plastic transition lenses. These improved lenses contain natural photochromic molecules. The molecules with these compounds are extremely clear in light that does not contain UV rays. However, as soon as they are put in sunlight they begin to change color. The Ultra Violet Rays causes the molecules to swap shape, absorbing this light. This causes these eyeglasses to become darker and turn inside sunglasses. When the UV light is removed, the molecules quickly go back to their previous state and the sunglasses become clear eyeglasses again.

The darkening process happens relatively quickly. The transition Glasses become dark inside of one minute, though they may continue to darken for about fifteen minutes, at which often time they will reach their darkest state. The process of going from darker to lighter is a small slower. Most Transition Lenses are noticeably lighter within 2 minutes and almost completely clear within five minutes. However, the clearing process at times may take up to fifteen minutes to achieve their most transparent state.

The stronger the Ultra Violet Rays, the darker the improved lenses become. This means that this effect will not be consistent. It depends on how strong the sun is.

Also, Transition Lenses do not darken without of UV Rays, so in your car, your transition lenses will remain lighter due to the absence of UV Rays.

Transition Lenses are not just for those wearing prescription eyeglasses. Many people who enjoy outdoor sports people want optimal protection from their sunglasses. These people may also want to consider a pair of eyeglasses with photochromic properties. These sunglasses have discolored lenses which become much darker when the UV light hits them. Because these lenses hardly ever are lighter, they are actually best worn outside. These Transition Lenses provide 100% UV protection.
