"Initial jobless claims fell by 1,000 in the week ending October 8th to 404,000 only 1,000 lower than the median prediction and also 1,000 less that the revised 405,000 total of the previous week. The four week moving average dropped 7,000 to 408,000, the smallest total since the third week of August.

Continuing claims in the week of October 1st declined 55,000 to 3.670 million. A rise of 10,000 to 3.710 million had been called by the Bloomberg Survey. The prior week was revised 25,000 higher to 3.725 million.

Emergency claims in the week of September 23rd slid 11,400 to 3.016 million from 3.0274 million. This is the second lowest total in more than two years. Only the first week of September at 2.9973 million scored less. In the same week the number of receivers for extended benefits rose 13,700 to 537,200 from 523,500.

Currently 3.5531 million people are collecting unemployment benefits beyond the initial eligibility period. They are 7.2781 million people receiving either original or supplemental unemployment benefits."
