With more and more consumers experiencing debt problems also comes a need for solutions. With this increase more and more debt management companies have appeared in the market. While some of these companies are legitimate and appropriately licensed, still others are passing on incorrect information to consumers. Many have taken to the airwaves or prints media in order two advertise their services. Using emotional appeals and other persuasive techniques they are easily attracting desperate consumers.
There are some distinctions that can be made when seeking assistance as well as information regarding debt solutions. Many entities are working as non-profit agencies in order to provide a public service to consumers. On the other hand you may find organizations that are non-profit and charge fees for their advice. Some of these organizations may have names similar to well-known and reputable not for profit organizations. Typically your best bet would be to seek the services of the non-profit organizations that have your best interest at heart rather than their own interests of seeking financial profits.
There also some signs that may provide you with some clues as to the intentions of the debt management service. Those companies that promise unbelievable results such as eliminating most of your debts should be taken with caution. Some companies may offer extremely low monthly payments. Usually when these companies make this claim they are actually seeking a hardship from your creditors in order to obtain the significant lower payments. They do not tell you this as well as not letting you know that this actually will hurt your credit in the long run. Additionally other dishonest businesses might target those debtors unable to obtain credit by promising that they can find them a loan.
Another thing to be aware of is when a debt management company will provide you with a quote as to how long it will take to repay your debt. Often these time periods are generated by a salesman without completely studying your debts. If you are considering buying a house in the future these companies may actually compound matters that will prevent you from doing so.
